What is inside the newsroom?

"Inside the Newsroom" is an ongoing series presented by PRSA Puget Sound throughout 2026. Each event will feature a panel discussion with media voices across a variety of mediums all around a central theme or beat, such as education media. Stay tuned for more events in this series on other topics! 

Event Details

Join PRSA Puget Sound for a timely conversation with education reporters as they unpack the stories shaping our schools and communities. Education journalism often mirrors the most pressing issues in society, from youth mental health and enrollment shifts to school funding, equity efforts, workforce challenges, and the rise of AI and edtech. Panelists will share how they navigate reporting in a rapidly changing media landscape, what makes an education story stand out, and how they balance data, student voice, and community impact.

Whether you work with school districts, edtech, higher education, or youth‑serving organizations, this session will offer fresh insight into today’s education narratives and how communicators can help support accurate, meaningful public understanding.

Neal Morton, Staff Writer, Hechinger Report | Neal Morton writes about K-12 schools, young people and their changing communities in the American West for The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit newsroom that covers education.

Cheryl Murfin, Managing Editor, Seattle’s Child | Cheryl Murfin, M.Ed/IAE is managing editor of Seattle's Child magazine, a monthly publication that has been informing, empowering and educating local parents since 1979.

Ryan Nguyen, Engagement Reporter, Seattle Times’ Education Lab | As an engagement reporter for The Seattle Times’ Education Lab, Ryan Nguyen helps connect the newsroom with parents, students, teachers and others who care about schools. He reports on the state’s education systems, hosts community events and oversees the newsroom's Student Voices program.

Amy Clark, Director, RALLY | A seasoned communications strategist, Amy Clark brings her expertise in earned media, message development and digital campaigns to her work motivating people from all walks of life to care – and to take action. With a passion for authentic storytelling in her work supporting advocates for education equity, affordable housing, democracy and economic justice, Amy believes deeply that lasting change is possible when impacted people take the lead in advocating for their own futures. Amy serves on the board of directors of Alliance for Education and is a ComNetwork Seattle LOCAL Leader.

Agenda

This is a ticketed event costing $15 for PRSA Puget Sound members, $30 for non-members and $10 for PRSSA student members. If ticket cost is a barrier to attending, please contact [email protected] for assistance.

The Alliance office, located in the Medical Dental Building – Winter Garden (3rd floor), is easily accessible by bus, streetcar, light rail and monorail transit lines. If you are driving, please be aware that there is limited street parking and ticketing is strict. We recommend using the parking garage at Pacific Place with entrances on 6th and 7th Avenues between Olive and Pine.
